2014 Lexus LF-LC

Australia Lexus has revealed the stunning LF-LC Blue concept at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney. Clad in unique Opal Blue, it is the second version of the LF-LC, first debuted at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year.

The all-new Opal Blue exterior is inspired by the lustrous base colour found in the naturally occurring semi-precious opal stone of outback Australia.

Beneath the blue skin LF-LC combines advanced technologies and materials with organic design, giving an insight into what the future of sports cars may hold. Central to the concept is a suite of advanced materials and technologies, including lightweight carbon fibre and the next generation of Lexus' industry-leading hybrid powertrain.

New to LF-LC and derived from project LFA, LF-LC leverages Lexus' extensive in-house experience in marrying carbon fibre and aluminium alloy materials to achieve a light body mass. The result is an extremely taut body that responds quickly and crisply to driver inputs – providing the perfect platform for the next-generation Lexus Hybrid Drive system.

Dubbed Advanced Lexus Hybrid Drive, the system features a powerful and efficient Atkinson cycle combustion engine which is mated to an advanced high-energy battery pack. The high-energy battery pack is designed to deliver greater power from a smaller battery than those currently used in Lexus' range of hybrid vehicles. Combined, the LF-LC Blue concept's petrol/electric hybrid powertrain develops 372kW (500hp) – the most of any Lexus hybrid.

Lexus Australia's Tony Cramb said that LF-LC Blue is a demonstration of what the future may hold for sports cars.

"For decades, Lexus has been synonymous with hybrid drivetrains, superior build quality, comfort and reliability," Cramb said. "With the LF-LC we now reinforce our design and technology credentials. The LF-LC is absolutely stunning. Its good looks mask some very exciting design and engineering innovations that will influence Lexus vehicles in the future.

"LF-LC is part concept, part reality: the concept hints at what's to come from Lexus, while the reality has us actively studying how we can engineer and build a vehicle like this in the future."

Supporting LF-LC's engineering feats is a stunning, technology-laden exterior and interior, clad in a new white and brown interior. Commanding the concept's bold front end are sculpted "L" shaped daytime running lights, vertical fog lamps and a fading dot matrix pattern to convey a sense of movement.

Continuing the sense of motion, LF-LC's side profile is commanded by deeply sculpted air intakes behind the doors. A wrap-around glass roof provides a panoramic view to the outside world while slicing through the air.

The concept car's glass roof features a lightweight, cantilevered pillar with a glass-to-glass junction inspired by modern architecture. LF-LC's dynamic lines are carried through to the rear deck, sculpturally integrating the spindle grille theme to complement the front of the vehicle while creating a unique sense of width. Tail lamps, inspired by a jet aeroplane afterburner, make use of inner lighting to create a remarkable sense of depth.

The rear is also fitted with fog lamps, repeating the fading dot matrix pattern of the front fog lamps. Visually, the integrated tail and fog lamps repeat the "L" shape and lead the viewer's eye down to the powerful Lexus quad exhaust.

The interior of the LF-LC concept contrasts the cool ambience of advanced technology with soft textures and organic shapes to create a driver-focused synergy of form and function. The cockpit expresses a feeling of both openness and security. The driver is enveloped by deeply scooped side panels and a high, curved console. The effect is to focus the driver zone on the controls and on the road.

Based on Lexus' commitment to creating an intuitive driving experience, the
LF-LC incorporates a remote touch-screen device that allows the driver to comfortably operate controls without shifting position or altering their line of sight.

Twin 12.3-inch LCD screens provide information and navigation display. Inputs come from a touch-screen control board piercing the swept centre console. The interface is used to control the audio system, climate controls and navigation, and features a pop-up touch-screen keyboard for more complex entries. Set directly in front of the driver, multi-level meters layer analogue and LCD technologies. The bottom layer displays temperature, fuel and the background for the Eco meter. The middle layer is the tachometer mechanical centre ring. The topmost layer provides indicators for the tachometer, speedometer and Eco meter.

Surfaces throughout the cabin are presented in a combination of smooth leather and suede, with brushed metal trim and wood accents. The lightweight, race-inspired front seats are formed of multiple layers and repeat the interlacing curves that define the cabin interior. The racing-style steering wheel is clad in lightweight carbon fibre and contains integrated controls and start button.

2013 Lexus GX460 Premium

When you think of Lexus, rugged and off-road doesn’t really come to mind. But the 2013 Lexus GX460 Premium that we’ll be testing this week can be described with both those words and more. The Lexus GX shares its platform with the Toyota 4Runner which is known for its off-road capability. The Lexus GX460 is designed to hold up to use over rugged terrain and is capable of tackling some challenging trails. So we put it to the test here in the mountains of Colorado and came away impressed.
With body-on-frame construction and low range gearing, the GX460 is far more rugged and powerful than the Lexus RX 350 AWD crossover we tested last week.  The RX 350 is great for daily commutes during the week, but it’s not built for rugged off-road use like the GX460. The big SUV comes equipped with enhancements that make it a viable vehicle to take to the backcountry.

GX460 is for fun on the weekends

The 2013 GX460 comes standard with a full-time four-wheel-drive system with Torsion Limited Slip center and locking differential and low-range gearing. The four-wheel-drive system is ideal for those who don’t want to worry about having to lock in the system manually as the system requires little or no input from the driver. For those who live in a rural setting, the GX460 feels secure and can handle steep snowy roads with ease. And for those who want to use the GX460 for fun on the weekends, The SUV can tow up to 6500 pounds with an optional hitch.
We took the GX460 off-road on snow-covered trails in the high country of Colorado and the luxury SUV handled every challenge we could give it. The GX uses permanent four-wheel drive and the use of a torque-sensing center differential allows the GX to continuously adjust power distribution from wheel to wheel as traction is needed. Lexus also uses an electronic traction system called A-TRAC for additional traction so wheel slip is quickly controlled on surfaces for snowy or icy roads. During our week with the GX460, it was as comfortable off-road as on the highway.
The Lexus GX will cruise down the highway quietly and efficiently keeping the occupants insulated from the noisy outside world. But the large luxury SUV has a downside in the city. The GX460 uses a truck-based suspension and designed for off-road use. It is a large vehicle and can be difficult to maneuver in the city. But on the open road and highway, the 301 horsepower 4.6-liter V8 is powerful enough for high-speed passing and full-power, on-ramp blasts. The V8 comes mated to a six-speed Sequential shift automatic that felt smooth in all situations.

GX460 comes loaded with Lexus luxury

Inside, the GX460 comes loaded with comfort and luxury. This 2013 GX 460 Premium tester ($58,240) came with tri-zone air conditioning, automatic HID projector-beam headlights; cargo tonneau; Adaptive Front Lighting System; electrochromic, power-retracting outside mirrors; heated steering wheel; and heated second-row seats.
Options included the Wide View Monitor system ($3,170) that includes a pre-collision system, Driver Attention Monitor, Lane Departure Alert, Intelligent High-Beam Headlamps, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and crawl control. The Mark Levinson Navigation audio package ($3,930) deserves special mention.

Mark Levinson audio system is for music lovers

The optional Mark Levinson audio system uses 17 speakers, powered by 330 watts with less than 0.1 percent total harmonic distortion. We cranked up a Van Halen song and there was practically no distortion. The back seat passengers said the sound is just as good in the back seat as the front. For those who love their music loud, it’s an option that is worth the price.

2013 Lexus ES 300h Hybrid

The 2013 Lexus ES goes back six generations and is the model that helped put Lexus on the map. This seventh-generation 2013 model has been remodeled and gets slightly larger outside and roomier inside. And for the first time, the Lexus ES features a hybrid version. This week we’ll be testing the 2013 ES 300h Hybrid sedan and see just how the new hybrid technology helps with fuel-efficiency. Hybrid technology has advanced and Toyota is the leading automaker in developing the gas-electric powertrains.

New ES gets increased rear legroom

Upon entering the new 2013 ES 300h, we notice that the back seat is bigger than the previous generation where legroom has increased by four inches leaving enough space for a 2013 ES to easily carry four adult individuals. Up front, the Lexus hybrid is an inviting place to spend time and get away from the noisy outside world. Lexus has always been know for its comfort and features, and this ES 300h hybrid is no different. This seventh-generation model comes with all the comforts and luxury you would expect from Lexus and doesn’t do anything too daring to mess it up.

This 2013 hybrid ES 300h ($38,850) tester came with the optional Navigation package ($2,625) that included goodies like an eight-inch backup camera, destination assist, eDestination, Lexus insider, Voice Command, HD Radio, Sirius XM, NavWeather, and Sirius Stocks and Sports. Standard features include push button start/stop, heated outside mirrors, power/tilt moonroof, premium sound system, Sirius Radio, Bluetooth and duel climate controls.
The Ultra Luxury package ($2,435) upgrades to leather seating, Bamboo wood trim, driver memory system, and power tilt/telescope steering wheel. It also includes rain-sensing wipers, heated wood steering wheel, passenger seat memory, driver’s seat cushion extender, ambient lighting, manual rear-door sunshades, and power trunk lid. Outside the 300h gets a rear spoiler, deeper rear valance, badging, and slightly different instrumentation inside.

Improved handling and performance

Behind the wheel, the ES 300h hybrid is a better performer and is much more enjoyable to drive than the previous generation. The 2013 ES has been revised with a new suspension and steering that helps make it more of a drivers car. But it still uses front-wheel-drive and the new rear-drive Lexus GS is the better choice for those looking for sporty handling.
The 2013 Lexus ES300h hybrid gets its power from a 156-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, electric motors, 245-volt NiMH battery pack and a continuously variable automatic transmission for 200 total system horsepower. It is equipped much like an ES350 but adds a vehicle proximity notification system (for public awareness when running on electric only). The ES 300h gets an EPA rating of 40/39 mpg city/highway fuel mileage.

Toyota’s hybrid technology leads the industry

Toyota is the leader in hybrid technology and we could tell in the week of driving, the Lexus ES 300h transitions between gasoline and electric power almost seamlessly. In stop-and-go traffic on I-25 in Denver, the hybrid ran in electric-only mode at gentle rates to 25 mph. And the gas-electric technology felt quick upon acceleration up to 70 mph. The biggest difference in the hybrid over the standard ES is the brake pedal is touchier because it triggers regeneration to charge the battery.

Conclusion

The 2013 Lexus ES has been redesigned and gets a new hybrid model that gets decent to excellent fuel economy depending on how it’s driven. The interior space has been improved, offers a quiet place to escape the outside world and well finished in attractive materials. The new ES delivers a reassuring ride, and improved handling over the outgoing model. The only downsides to the hybrid are the premium in price and 20 percent less luggage space without a long-item pass-through. But the hybrid makes a compelling argument for anyone who needs a four or five-passenger sedan with good fuel-efficiency.

2013 Lexus RX 450h Hybrid

The luxury hybrid segment gets a whole lot quicker and interesting with the new 2013 Lexus RX 450h Hybrid hitting the road. When Akio Toyoda took over the reigns at Toyota, he vowed to make the Toyota and Lexus lineup more sporty. And the new RX 450h is a good example of the changes that have been coming to the luxury brand. The brand was starting to get boring and only appealed to those over 50. Lexus needed to reach out to a younger generation and it looks like they are succeeding.
The 450h not only gets good fuel mileage and low emissions, but it gets a new Sport mode that changes the driving dynamics significantly for the better. Gone are the days of boring hybrids that get good mileage, but can’t get out of their own way. Today we’re seeing new technology that will change people’s opinions of hybrids and also electric propulsion. The Toyota Corporation has some of the best hybrid technology in the world, and now they are starting to mate it with performance.

Hybrid technology is evolving

Why should you care about a luxury SUV hybrid grocery hauler? This technology will be used in more and more vehicles as we see these systems evolve. And if most of your driving is around town and in stop-and-go traffic, it will matter to you.
Just take a look at the fuel mileage and we’ll see the technology is getting better. The luxury SUV hybrid gets better mileage than its RX 350 stablemate and also achieves a Super Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle (SULEV II) certification in California, and a Tier 2-Bin 3 emissions rating in all other states.
The 2013 RX 450h is EPA-rated at 32/28 mpg city/highway, the RX 450h AWD that we are testing gets 30/28 mpg. For the 2013 model, Lexus engineers added a new Sport mode that changes the steering effort, throttle mapping and transmission shifting. This makes the new 450h a lot more fun to drive than other comparable luxury SUVs.

Performance is comparable to gas-only models

That translates directly to better performance overall, and especially when it comes off the line. Acceleration performance is now comparable to that of the gasoline-only versions. That can make going to the grocery store a lot more interesting. We are beginning to see what a gas engine mated to an electric motor is capable of.
With its electric motor, the 2013 RX 450h AWD accelerates more quickly than the gas RX 350 models do. Lexus claims 0-60 performance of 7.4 seconds for the 2013 RX Hybrid with all-wheel drive (7.8 seconds with front-wheel drive). We took the 450h up I-70 at altitude west of Denver and were thoroughly impressed with the performance. The luxury SUV felt much lighter and nimble than its 4510 lb weight would suggest. It smoked some of the other SUVs who were heading west for a weekend in the mountains.
The RX 450h with all-wheel drive ($47,310) comes with a bit more standard equipment than the RX 350. Both come with fabric upholstery, automatic dual-zone climate control, AM/FM/6CD with nine speakers and a luxury level of standard equipment. 2013 RX models come standard with a power rear liftgate.

Technology abounds inside

Inside, the cabin features a level of luxury you would expect from Lexus. It features a level of technology that gives the driver a sensation that feels just like configuring a new computer. The number of adjustments needed to drive the 450h takes more time than in most new SUVs. This tester came with a Heads-Up Display, Back-up camera and Remote Touch Controller and navigation.
The Premium Mark Levinson sound system was the only disappointment. It may have great surround sound, but it took hours to figure out how to change and lock in the radio station. Maybe this writer is getting too old to figure the complicated system out. Anyone under 20 years old would have likely had it figured out in a matter of seconds.
Overall, the 2013 Lexus RX 450h hybrid is exceptionally quiet and sumptuously comfortable inside. It comes with a long list of safety features and has an even longer list of electronic accessories that are for the most part user-friendly. The new 2013 450h gets a whole lot quicker, plus it offers greater fuel efficiency and environmental friendliness of a hybrid.
