2014 Mercedes-Benz GLA - First official sketches

At the begining of this year, Mercedes-Benz has unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show the GLA Concept, a prototype that previews an upcoming rival for the Audi Q3 or the BMW X1. Today, the German car manufacturer has published a couple of sketches with the production version of the GLA. According to the same statement, the production version of the Mercedes-Benz GLA will be officially unveiled this fall at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The sketches were published on the Facebook official page with this description below: "Something's coming. Stay tuned!"
On the outside, the German crossover is heavily inspired by the A-Class. It only comes with new bulging fenders, tailgate mounted spoiler and two bar grille. Inside the cabin, everything is identical to the A-Class. Under the hood, the engine lineup will be, of course, the same with the one found on the A-Class hatchback.

According to some rumors, the upcoming GLA crossover will also get a performance version. It will be dubbed GLA45 AMG and it will come with the turbocharged 2.0 liter four cylinder engine that can develop 360 horsepower.

2008 Hamann McLaren SLR Volcano

The serial Mercedes-Benz SLR is already one of the most impressive cars on our roads – but compared to the HAMANN VOLCANO it still looks rather harmless. Once again, HAMANN-Motorsport proves its cutting edge when it comes to refining superb sports cars. From a lift-reducing body design to a powerful performance enhancement to a lavishly styled interior, HAMANN focuses on all components of this luxury car and makes the automobile dreams of its exclusive clientele come true.

The total makeover of the Laupheim-based refiner is made of extremely light full carbon and consists of front- and rear wing extensions and also new side skirt attachments and sheathings. The front view of the Volcano is optically perfected with a newly designed bonnet which enhances the overall impression by its integrated hood scoop. But also for the rear, the refining technicians implemented new ideas giving the SLR appearance its finishing touch. Under the boot lid cover, HAMANN placed a strong diffuser which improves the car´s output in combination with the large rear wing. At the front axle, a newly developed front spoiler renders the necessary contact pressure. If desired, an especially developed overall paint for the VOLCANO in either aluminium/chrome or white/matt completes the striking appearance of this bolide.

The 21-inch rims named EDITION RACE with tyres measuring 255/30ZR21 at the front and 345/25ZR21 at the back render an optimal road grip. The design of the extraordinary light forged wheel thereby combines vitality and elegance and also perfectly fills out the wheel houses.

The HAMANN makeover is not only sportive, but also has a lot to offer under the bonnet. The HAMANN motor technicians get the most out of the Mercedes Benz V8-aggregate (5.4 litres, 626 hp, 780 Nm): 700 hp / 515 kW and a maximum torque of 830 Nm at 3,300 crankshaft revolutions per minute. The therefore necessary modifications include a newly programmed control unit, especially developed high performance exhaust manifolds and an amended belt pulley combination for the serial compressors. In order to facilitate the increased motor performance, HAMANN adds a second water pump and adjusts the gearbox electronics. Invigorated in this way and with the adequate sound from the six end pipes of the sport exhaust system, the VULCANO accelerates from naught to a hundred in only 3.6 seconds. With a maximum speed of 348 km/h, the HAMANN VOLCANO is 14 km/h faster than the serial model.

The HAMANN product even beats the factory-provided performance-enhanced special series SLR 722 by impressive 11 km/h.

A skillfully refined interior is waiting for the VOLCANO-pilot and also the exterior does not rank behind. The overall makeover contains pedals and foot rests in aluminium as well as noble door sill protectors and headrests with embossed embroidered HAMANN-Logos. They can also be found on the exclusive floor mats. The overall makeover can be enhanced with a HAMANN interior set containing custom-made carbon parts for the dashboard and centre console. If desired, also the roof interior, all pillars, the cockpit including the steering wheel and the sun visors can hereby be adjusted in terms of colour. Therefore, HAMANN solely uses the high-quality material Alcantara.

2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS facelift spied hiding new front fascia

Launching late next year

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLS facelift has been grabbed on camera once again ahead of a scheduled late 2014 reveal.
The current generation of the CLS went on sale at the beginning of 2011 so Mercedes-Benz is working on a facelift which will reach dealerships in early 2015. Don't expect a lot of changes in terms of design as all styling tweaks will be reserved to the front fascia where the four-door coupe will get a new bumper, grille and headlights.
More importantly, it will most likely be the first U.S. Mercedes-Benz model to feature a 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission which will be available "in at least one engine combination", according to a company insider.
Chances are the CLS Shooting Brake facelift will be launched together with the regular version towards the end of next year as 2015MY.

Mercedes-Benz G65 AMG modified by TopCar and Hamann

The guys from TopCar have prepared a special package for the mighty Mercedes-Benz G65 AMG. You know that last year, the Russian tuner has released an outrageous kit for the ML 63 AMG but this new package is really, really special.

On the outside, the Russians have installed a Hamann Spyridon body kit. It has a carbon fiber hood, some new LED lights in the lower section of the spoiler, new rear fenders, a triple exhaust and a redesigned rear spoiler.
Inside the cabin, the guys from TopCar have done a great job. They have wrapped the upholstery and some other stuff in crocodile leather and Alcantara while perforated beige leather finishes the special combination.

Gullwing America 300 SLC

Gullwing America have been manufacturing the retro-modern 300 SL Panamerica for around four years now. Their recipe involves making a  custom chassis, fitting a brand new Mercedes-Benz drivetrain into it, and then placing a lightly customised 300 SL reproduction body on top. However for one Eastern European client that simply wasn’t good enough. So he’s managed to get the company to build him his very own, one-off creation called the 300 SLC.
The Gullwing America 300 SLC is based on a 2012 SLS AMG Roadster, and its running gear and interior required only minor changes. However what did require major changes is the bodywork. Gullwing America have fabricated a handmade aluminium body for the vehicle based on the design of the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SC (W-188) – of which only 92 were made.

“We tried to keep the original lines of this model, which are timeless,” says Arturo Alonso, head of Gullwing America (GWA). However, making it truly unique required some changes. This included changing the position of the pop-out rear spoiler and modernizing the headlights with LED’s. The grille was heavily redesigned and features an illuminated emblem on the top.
The car also has custom made, 22 x 12 rear and 21 x 9.5 front, GWA Evolution wheels wrapped in Continental rubber. A special exhaust system and adjustable height suspension finish off the enhancements.

2014 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series

Amongst the car community, Mercedes-Benz is respected, AMG is celebrated, and AMG Black Series is feared. Tack onto that the fact the SLS is Mercedes-Benz’s halo car and you’ve really got something special. The 2014MY Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series is the most extreme version of the SLS. It’s basically a SLS GT3 racer for the road. It’s faster, lighter and more uncompromising than any road-going version of the SLS before.
AMG’s engineers have gone through considerable effort to reduce the car’s weight, managing to cut 70 kgs (154 lbs) off the standard SLS AMG’s weight. Numerous body elements, such as the hood, the rear panel behind the seats, the diagonal braces on the underbody and the driveshaft are formed from carbon fiber. A number of parts on the aluminium spaceframe have also been replaced by carbon fiber components. A lithium-ion battery which is used in place of the conventional starter battery saves a further 8 kgs (17.6 lbs).
The 6.3 litre V8 of the SLS AMG Black Series has been given a few extra goodies to raise power output – which now stands at 622 hp. Curiously however torque has been adversely affected – although only by a smidgen. But that hasn’t stopped the SLS AMG Black Series from sprinting to 62 mph (100 km/h)  in just 3.6 seconds, 0.2 seconds quicker than the standard SLS. The electronically limited top speed of 196 mph (317 km/h) remains identical.

Engine modifications to the SLS AMG Black Series include:
- Increase in maximum engine speed from 7200 to 8000 rpm
- Fully revised high-speed valve train with modified camshafts, adapted cam geometry and optimised bucket tappets featuring a special coating which is otherwise exclusive to racing vehicles
- Modification of the intake air ducting: derestriction and adaptation to the new maximum engine speed
- Adaptation of the engine application and increase in peak pressure
In addition the engineers optimised the crank assembly for better endurance under tough conditions. The SLS AMG Black Series’ engine is cradled within a special support system. A gas-filled strut braces the eight-cylinder engine on the body, effectively eliminating undesired load change reactions during performance driving – or hooning as it’s officially known.
To improve handling and lower the car’s center of gravity, the 7-speed dual clutch transmission is installed 10mm lower in the chassis. The dual clutch transmission features four driving modes (C, S, S+ and M). “Sport plus” and “Manual”. The transmission software allows for harder and faster shifts than in the standard car.
Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH said of the car. “The new SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is a perfect study in the one hundred percent transfer of technology and engineering from motorsport to the road. We have drawn inspiration from the worldwide success of the SLS AMG GT3 customer sport racing car on both a conceptual and a technological level. Boasting numerous lightweight components and fantastic driving dynamics, our fifth Black Series model guarantees pure, unadulterated ‘Driving Performance’. The SLS AMG Coupé Black Series is the ultimate choice for fast laps and highly emotional driving experiences”
The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series will launch next year. Pricing is yet to be announced.

2009 Piecha Design Mercedes-Benz SL Avalange RS

(from Piecha Design Press Release) World premiere at the Tuning World Bodensee:
Piecha Design modernises the SL to the Avalange RS
Double headlights and one-lamella grill mark the front
Complete aerodynamics kit for all R230 models
Perfect fit guaranteed by assembly to original spots
Four stainless steel pipes render powerful sound
Light alloy wheels dp3 Avalange in 9.5x20 and 10.5x20 inches
Piecha Design combines the best of two worlds. With the SL-Roadster (R230), the Mercedes specialist from Rottweil in Baden Wrttemberg, Germany brings the classic four-eyed face with the double headlights and the fresh design of the 2008 facelift together. Thereby, the Avalange RS with an own character originates. At the Tuning World Bodensee in Friedrichshafen, the new model celebrates its world premiere at the exhibition booth of Eurotuners Best (hall B3, stand 204).

The core part of the new design is the entirely re-engineered front. Piecha Design places its one-lamella grill between the double headlights which is typical for the SL facelift since 2008. But the refiner places the grill significantly flatter. The automobile front with the enlarged Mercedes bonnet star gives the car a much more dynamic look. The entirely re-engineered front skirt (from 1,985 euros including VAT) with the integrated one-lamella grill and bonnet star insert is made of elastomer-modified fibre glass composite material in one piece. Compared to normal glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP), this has three advantages: perfect fit, even higher stability and at the same time a lower weight. Fog lights with chrome rings and black, xenon-bright LED daytime running lights are already built into the front skirt and are included in the delivery. The aerodynamics kit can be optionally ordered for automobiles with or without parking assistant system PARKTRONIC.

The determined design line by Piecha Design does not only show at the new front skirt, but also at the chromed bonnet fins (98 euros) and the SL-R side fins which are extended right to the doors (476 euros). This characteristic style is continued in a striking way with side skirts (1,100 euros) with a reverse air inlet pointing towards the rear. The winding design of the skirts sustainably affects the wedged shape of the side view and gives the Avalange RS additional dynamics.

The rear skirt can be optionally ordered with or without PARKTRONIC (from 1,390 euros) and the continuously embedded grid which spreads over the entire width of the automobile, the design is further enhanced. Piecha design offers the separately inserted diffuser which is limited by the four pipe system of the sport rear muffler QUADRO (1,475 euros) as well as the additional middle front lip optionally in carbon fibre. Alternatively, QUADRO 4-pipe tail ends (398 euros) are also available for welding them to the serial mufflers.

Piecha Design confirms its sense for design vocabulary with further details. A discreet rear spoiler lip (from 275 euros) on the boot lid, optionally also in carbon fibre, gives the overall appearance a harmonious finish. The Mercedes manufacturer completely refrains from so-called fender corners at the spoilers and therefore creates an aerodynamics kit of one piece.

Except for the front skirt, all aerodynamics components also fit for the facelift of the Mercedes SL from 04/2008 including the AMG models SL 63 and SL 65 whose styling is especially enhanced by the Avalange RS look.

The safety of the component parts perfectly matches the sporty shape. Each attached part has been checked in elaborate tests far beyond the 300 km/h mark.

All aerodynamics parts are delivered with all inner attachments and are manufactured in such a way that they can be fitted to the original spots. This does not only reduce the assembly costs, but also allows selling the entire original parts.

The sportive look of the Avalange RS is not only enhanced by the aerodynamic kit, but also by lowering the car by 35 millimetres. For ABC sport running gears, Piecha Design also offers an electronic lowering.

The light alloy wheels dp3 Avalange do not only bear the same name as the car, but they also match perfectly technically and also visually. The one-piece 20-inch-wheel in a ten-spoke design is available in High Gloss Silver and Satin Black. In both finishes, the stainless steel rim well is highly gloss-polished and equipped with bolt heads for a sporty multi-part look. Piecha Design offers wheels for the Avalange RS in the dimension 9.5x20 for the front- and 10.5x20 inches for the rear axle for 245 and 285 tyres or 255 and 305 tyres. (2,290 euros for the entire rim set). Alternatively there is the real three-part dp1 CC with 18 edged spokes in different sizes up to 9.5x20 and 11.5x20 inches (4,490 euros).

The refiner lifts the driving pleasure with the Power Converter Intermedia (429 euros). Therefore, there is no more reaction second when pushing the electronic accelerator. The Avalange RS fastly reacts to the acceleration and performs excellent sprints from all speed ranges.

Another comfort highlight is the Varioroof module (299 euros). A must have product. With this, the convertible top can be opened and closed up to a speed of 60 km/h. The roof can be opened by pressing a button in the interior or the serial car key. The front passenger (only) can enjoy films with the DVD-connection module (189 euros) also during the journey.

The Avalange RS confirms that Piecha Design knows how to give a classic model a fresh look and how to create an automobile with an individual character at the same time. The experience from working at the Mercedes-Benz SLK (R171) has now been perfected with the SL. The love for details and highest quality production make Piecha Design the first choice for Mercedes roadsters.

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren by CUT48

The diversity in the wrapping foil market follows the boom of time and is not quite clear. There one can easily get a no-name foil especially while self-assembly. And when there is a possibility that the final result could be quite far from your expectations, it’s time to apply to a specialist. Therefore, it’s preferable to consult a specialist at first.
From the very beginning, the company CUT48 was famous for handwork car wrapping foil due to its excellent quality and precision. This refers to the choice of foil, design and tastefully coordinated colors and also to the sense of aesthetics and perfectly precise handwork. CUT48 consumers felt this care beforehand. Its goal was to individualize the car in such a way that it would become something unique. Every day handmade masterpieces appear in the main quarters of the company in Münster. The masterpieces were created in such a way to realize the consumers’ personal preferences. So, the complete car has an original silver exterior paint coating and it is packed in blue and black gloss wrapping foil (4.350 Euro).
This time specialists of the company CUT48 have created an exceptional sweetheart, called McLaren SLR, which has just arrived from the assembly line with all imaginable features. After the power upgrade at EDO competition, the SLR has over 722 hp at maximal torque of 890 Nm. This power is reached due to quite a bunch of measures such as installed electronic tuning of the ECU, sport air filters and new sport catalytic converters, modified compressor work, new exhaust manifold and modified intake system. The whole work was monitored on the test stand. The 200 km/h speed limit is reached in less than 10 seconds respectively. Maximal speed is electronically limited at 345 km/h. Stainless steel sport exhaust system cares for the super sound. This is a pure sound enjoyment.

2013 Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG

(from Mercedes-Benz Press Release)  The Mercedes-Benz A 45 AMG: Driving Performance for the new generation

Affalterbach The A 45 AMG sees Mercedes-AMG embarking on a new era. For the first time in the company's history extending back over more than 45 years, Mercedes-Benz's performance brand is offering a fascinating high-performance vehicle in the compact class. The A 45 AMG is representative of the "AMG Performance 50" strategy for the future, which is to run up to the 50th birthday of Mercedes-AMG GmbH in 2017. With a maximum output of 265 kW (360 hp) and up to 450 Newton metres of torque, the AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine is the most powerful series production four-cylinder engine in the world. The sensational power density of 133 kW (181 hp) outstrips even the most powerful super sports cars. At the same time, the engine also boasts supreme efficiency and complies with the EU6 emissions standard. The A 45 AMG also leads its segment in terms of fuel consumption, running on 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres in NEDC combined mode. These credentials indicate that a further high-performing member of the BlueDIRECT family is now taking to the road. The performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive onboard the A 45 AMG sets new standards in the car's segment.
The substance of the new Mercedes-Benz vehicle architecture for front- and all-wheel drive provides the perfect basis for the A 45 AMG and at least two other high-performance premium automobiles from Affalterbach. In designing and developing the A 45 AMG, the experts at AMG have drawn on the company's decades of experience in motorsport and the production of powerful, high-performance vehicles. As such, the A 45 AMG will inherit the corporate DNA and embody the AMG brand claim "Driving Performance" to perfection: a fascinatingly sporty driving experience combined with impressive craftsmanship and pronounced individuality.
"The A 45 AMG will enable Mercedes-AMG to appeal to new customers and tap new markets," observes Ola Kllenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. We are adding an extremely attractive model with exceptional performance data to our range of unique high-performance automobiles."
"With the new A 45 AMG we have well and truly achieved our aim of developing the most dynamic, powerful and efficient four-cylinder series production car," comments Tobias Moers, Head of Overall Vehicle Development and Board Member of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.With its impressive high-tech package and the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive, the A 45 AMG is a thoroughbred AMG through and through."
Dynamic and individual vehicle for new target group
Spanning the age range from 30 to mid-40, the target group is younger than the AMG clientele to date. In successful careers and with an independent frame of mind, these customers seek a dynamic and individual vehicle. They wish to lend expression to their style- and trend-oriented way of life with a car from a recognised high-performance brand. The A 45 AMG provides the predominantly urban target group with an agile high-performance vehicle. Mercedes-AMG accommodates their tech-savvy and individual outlook on life with an extremely broad selection of optional equipment and appointments, colours and materials.
Typically AMG: the most powerful series production four-cylinder engine in the world
Two figures show that the A 45 AMG holds pole position in its displacement segment:the newly developed AMG 2.0-litre turbo engine is the most powerful series production four-cylinder turbo engine in the world. A maximum output of 265 kW (360 hp) and up to 450 Newton metres of torque are unmatched by any other mass-produced turbocharged four-cylinder engine worldwide. The power density of 133 kW (181 hp) is also absolutely unrivalled. In this discipline, the new AMG high-performance turbo engine even outstrips the most powerful super sports cars.
The high power and torque output and the combination with the performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive as standard lead to extremely dynamic performance: the A 45 AMG accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds, while its top speed stands at 250 km/h (electronically limited). The specially developed AMG engine is also a model of efficiency the A 45 AMG also leads its segment on this front, with fuel consumption of 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres in NEDC combined mode. This is accompanied by particularly low exhaust emissions: the A 45 AMG already complies with the EU6 emissions standard which is not scheduled to enter into force until 2015, combined with the limit for the particle count per kilometre of 6 x 1011 which will be mandatory from 2017.

The basis for these impressive figures is provided by the high-tech package which has been put together by Mercedes-AMG. As a high-performance engine belonging to the BlueDIRECT family, the AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine features spray-guided direct petrol injection via piezo injectors positioned centrally in the four combustion chambers. The combination of multiple fuel injection and multiple spark ignition improves fuel utilisation and increases thermodynamic efficiency substantially, leading to lower exhaust emissions. Other highlights include the gravity-die sandcast all-aluminium crankcase, weight-optimised crank assembly with forged steel crankshaft and forged pistons with friction-optimised piston rings, NANOSLIDE cylinder wall technology, air-water charge air cooling, generator management and ECO start/stop function.
Twin-scroll turbocharger and AMG sports exhaust system with exhaust flap
Mercedes-AMG addresses the essential challenges concerning the response of small-displacement turbo engines by means of a twin-scroll turbocharger, maximum derestriction of the exhaust system and an innovative injection strategy. The twin-scroll technology provides for a more spontaneous build-up of charge pressure, making effective use of exhaust gas back pressure, exhaust gas temperature and exhaust gas impulse. This results in a swifter build-up of torque right from the lower rev range. As a positive side-effect, the twin-scroll technology also benefits fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. At a maximum charge pressure of 1.8 bar, the AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine also leads the field in this respect.
The AMG sports exhaust system features large pipe cross-sections and an automatically controlled exhaust flap. This technology, which is familiar from the SLK 55 AMG, reconciles the two apparently conflicting aims of tangible dynamism and hallmark Mercedes comfort on long journeys. The flap is continuously adjusted by map control according to the power called up by the driver, load status and engine speed. The two striking tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system emit a fascinating, full engine sound which is particularly impressive during powerful acceleration.
An AMG Performance exhaust system with exhaust flap and featuring a dedicated tailpipe trim design is optionally available for the A 45 AMG. This provides for an even more emotional and striking engine sound when the throttle is open and during gear shifting. The double-declutching function during downshifting and the interruption of ignition and injection during upshifting under full load produce a particularly throaty sound with the AMG Performance exhaust system and create a level of emotionality which is otherwise the reserve of engines with more than 4 cylinders.
High-performance cooling system with components from the SLS AMG
The high driving dynamics of the A 45 AMG call for a highly effective cooling system. On the basis of the components belonging to the SLS AMG, a low-temperature circuit is additionally deployed for air-water charge air cooling of the four-cylinder turbo engine. The large cooler section at the front level of the cooling module is supplemented by an additional cooler in the wheel arch. Together with the charge air cooler which is connected in series, a high-performance electric pump ensures the required flow through the water coolers located behind the large intake ports. This provides for ideal cooling of the highly compressed charge air, thereby contributing towards optimum engine performance.
Cooling of the transmission oil is integrated in the water cooling circuit for the engine. The water cooler positioned behind the front apron is supported by the heat exchanger which is fitted directly on the transmission and supplied with cooling water as required by means of an auxiliary pump.
Engine production a tradition of hand-built excellence
Similarly to all eight- and twelve-cylinder engines, the new AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine is also hand-built according to the traditional AMG philosophy of "one man, one engine". An exclusive assembly line has been set up for the new AMG engine at the Mercedes-Benz engine production plant in Klleda where all BlueDIRECT four-cylinder engines are built for the A- and B-Class models. A characteristic feature of the "one man, one engine" production process is the AMG engine plate bearing the signature of the responsible engine fitter. Apart from serving as an AMG hallmark confirming superlative production quality, the AMG engine plate also attests to the peerless DNA of Mercedes-Benz's high-performance brand.
AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission
Dual clutch transmission and all-wheel drive the drive package onboard the new A 45 AMG is a demonstration of high-end engineering prowess. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sports transmission is directly flange-mounted on the transversely installed AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine. Key software modules have been adopted from the SLS AMG super sports car with its inspirational power transmission concept. The dual clutch transmission of the A45 features seven gears, three driving programmes, a double-declutching function and RACE START for optimum acceleration. The strengths of the AMG DCT sports transmission include spontaneous gear shifting without any interruption in tractive power, a tailor-made control strategy, extremely smooth and easy gear shifting and a high level of efficiency. Reinforced gear wheels provide for maximum stability. Synchroniser rings with carbon-fibre friction linings improve durability while also optimising the response time during manual gear-changing the ideal basis for ambitious laps on cordoned-off race tracks.
"Momentary M mode" for even greater dynamism and driving enjoyment
Another special feature designed to enhance dynamic performance and driving enjoyment is so-called "Momentary M mode". In C and S mode, this enables the driver to activate manual mode ("M") without having to remove a hand from the steering wheel, by pressing the "up" or "down" shift paddle once. In Momentary M mode the driver experiences the dynamism and performance of gear-shifting in manual mode in all of the automatic driving programmes, with automatic up- and down-shifting into the bargain. This allows the driver to devote his full attention to the vehicle's impressive performance.
The shift times in manual mode "M" and in Sport mode "S" are similarly sporty in character to those of the SLS AMG GT super sports car.Briefly and precisely interrupting ignition and injection under full load leads to even faster gearshifts with a more emotional sound than ever. In "C" mode (Controlled Efficiency), tangibly soft transmission and engine characteristics support a fuel-efficient and comfort-oriented driving style. The ECO start/stop function is also active in "C" mode.
Performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive
The new A 45 AMG comes with variable, performance-oriented AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive as standard. In developing this all-wheel drive, the focus firmly was on performance and dynamism. The power flux to the rear powertrain is provided by a compact power take-off unit (PTU) which is fully integrated in the 7-speed sports transmission. It does not possess an oil circuit of its own. Instead, it is supplied with lubricant from the oil circuit of the sports transmission . This configuration gives rise to substantial weight advantages in comparison to rival systems which branch off power by means of an add-on component with its own oil circuit. Together with the friction-minimised tapered roller bearings, the PTU achieves an excellent level of efficiency. As an additional bonus, the system weight of the new AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive is up to 25 percent lighter than the all-wheel drive versions offered by the competition.
A two-part propeller shaft transfers the power from the AMG 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine to the rear axle. In the interests of favourable weight distribution, an electrohydraulically controlled multi-disc clutch is integrated with the rear axle differential. The multi-disc clutch immediately detects slip at the front axle. A hydraulic pump instantaneously presses the discs together and channels the engine torque to the rear wheels as necessary. All this takes place virtually without the driver noticing. To enable particularly fast response, the pump is always active and does not require to be started up each time it is needed, such as is customary with other systems. Power distribution is fully variable: in normal driving, the A 45 AMG uses front-wheel drive in the interests of optimum efficiency. When the driving dynamics so require, the variable AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive splits the torque between front and rear axle up to a ratio of 50 : 50 percent. The variables influencing the power distribution ratio are vehicle speed, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, steering angle, speed difference between the individual wheels, selected gear and accelerator position.
3-stage ESP with ESP Curve Dynamic Assist
An exclusive feature is the interaction of the AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive with the 3-stage ESP and the ESP Curve Dynamic Assist. The three ESP stages enable the driver to vary the dynamics of the A 45 AMG according to his individual wishes at the push of a button. The safety-oriented "ESP ON" mode supports the driver in maintaining neutral handling characteristics. The system initiates braking intervention on one or more wheels and reduces the engine torque on detecting that the operating conditions are becoming unstable.
Briefly pressing the ESP button activates "ESP SPORT Handling" mode. This dynamically oriented driving mode applies appropriate control strategies for later ESP intervention and increased drive torque at the rear axle. This means more fun at the wheel for drivers who are keen to exploit the vehicle's dynamic potential. Pressing the ESP button longer activates "ESP OFF". In this mode, the ESP functions are not available. ESP OFF should only be used by experienced drivers on cordoned-off race tracks. When the driver steps on the brake pedal in the course of braking in "SPORT Handling" mode or "ESP OFF" mode, all the safety functions of the ESP system are restored.
ESP Curve Dynamic Assist complements the ESP system to perfection: during dynamic cornering, imperceptible braking intervention on the inside wheel gives rise to a defined yaw moment around the vertical axis, resulting in precise cornering by the A 45 AMG and ensuring that the vehicle remains under control at all times. Curve Dynamic Assist is adapted according to the selected ESP mode. In "ESP SPORT Handling" mode and "ESP OFF" mode it supports the driver's wish for increased agility and driving dynamics. ESP Curve Dynamic Assist is an additional function of the Electronic Stability Program which noticeably improves not only agility, but also active driving safety in critical conditions.
AMG sports suspension with independent front and rear axle
Like every AMG high-performance automobile, the new A 45 AMG also incorporates sophisticated axle technology. For enhanced driving dynamics, the three-link front suspension is provided with stiffer steering knuckles and totally new elastokinematics. Newly developed, more rigid bearings are employed in the lower link plane. These provide for more agile cornering properties and more precise and direct feedback from the road surface. The more rigid bearings also lead to higher camber stiffness, enabling higher cornering speeds. In developing the complete front axle, great importance has been attached to attaining the best possible traction in highly dynamic driving.
The four-link rear axle of the A 45 AMG is also a totally new development. In the course of optimising the elastokinematics, the strut bearings were duly adapted for maximum driving dynamics and control. The rear axle carrier is provided with more rigid bearings for increased driving stability; the subframe is rigidly connected to the body. The AMG sports suspension with specifically tuned spring/damper units and larger stabilisers provides for high lateral acceleration and a reduced rolling tendency in fast double bends. The A 45 AMG comes as standard with twin-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels, painted in titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, fitted with 235/40 R 18 tyres.
AMG speed-sensitive sports steering and AMG high-performance braking system
The electromechanical Dual Pinion AMG speed-sensitive sports steering with AMG-specific, speed-dependent power assistance and a constant steering ratio (14.5 : 1) enables high steering precision and agility. The electric motor is installed in space-saving configuration on the steering gear. The AMG high-performance braking system with ventilated and perforated brake discs all round in size 350 x 32 millimetres at the front and 330 x 22 millimetres at the rear provides for spontaneous and reliable deceleration.
Exterior design with sporty and muscular highlights
Mercedes-AMG adds emphatically sporty and muscular highlights to the emotional exterior design of the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class sporting the new dynamic style, sculptural character and feature lines on the sides. These refinements ensure that the A 45 AMG looks the part as a distinctive high-performance automobile a genuine AMG through and through.
The front view of the A 45 AMG is characterised by the AMG "twin blade" radiator grille and the cross strut in the AMG front apron, both painted in matt titanium grey. Striking black flics surround the large cooling air intakes at the sides.
